Workplace
Violence Issues Fact:
The major cause of
death of women in the workplace and the second most common cause of death
of men is Workplace Violence, according to the U.S. Department of Labor.
Many employers and employees are unaware of problems within their company
due to fear of disclosure and how it might affect an employee's job. Fact:
According to the BLS Census of Fatal Occupational Injuries, there
were 709 workplace homicides in 1998, accounting for 12% of the
total 6,026 fatal work injuries in the United States.
In
healthcare we know that, medically speaking, there are conditions in which
our patients become violent. Head injuries, mental instabilities,
medications. They can all contribute to violent tendencies. While we are
concerned with these people, generally we know how to deal with them. What
is of concern is the increasing violent behavior of visitors as well as
patients who do not have the above mentioned conditions. These "less
than model citizens" not only effect healthcare, but all businesses.
We
are seeing more violence related injuries in our Emergency Rooms. And
violence tends to follow violence. Domestic abuse drug related activities,
and a sense that people are not responsible for their own behavior, have
all increased the chance that somewhere, today, a nurse will be hit
or a doctor threatened, a secretary stalked by an ex-spouse, or a manager
killed.
